Somerset County ‘2017 Senior Expo’ Offers Free Health Screenings and Educational Breakout Sessions
BRIDGEWATER – The Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services will host its 2017 Senior Expo from 2 to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 19, at the county Senior Wellness Center at Bridgewater, located at 876 East Main St.
Free screenings of blood pressure, balance, body mass index, glucose, hearing and vision will be offered by Somerset County community health partners, including the Somerset Hills Visiting Nurses Association, the Community Visiting Nurse Association, Saint Peter’s University Hospital, Dr. Mike’s Hearing Express, and RWJBarnabas Health. Breakout sessions will be offered between 2:30 to 3 p.m., 3:30 to 4 p.m. and 4:30 to 5 p.m., including “Simple Exercise, Big Impact,” “Finding Your Way to the Right Services” and “Senior Center or Adult Day Care.”
“Older Americans Month is the perfect time to offer a Senior Expo and we invite older adults age 60 and over, caregivers, friends and family to take advantage of the free health screenings and to learn about the wide variety of programs and services that are available through our Office on Aging and Disability Services and other local resources,” said Freeholder Brian D. Levine, human services liaison.
The Senior Wellness Center at Bridgewater is operated by the county Office on Aging and Disability Services. The multipurpose facility offers a variety of educational, recreational and entertaining activities for active older adults, including wellness programs and health screenings. The centers are accessible to individuals with disabilities.
Somerset County senior centers offer a wide range of experiences designed for lifelong enrichment in a social and uplifting atmosphere, intended to positively impact overall health. Many of these programs are funded, in part, through the Older Americans Act.
This year’s national theme for Older Americans Month is “Age Out Loud,” which shines a light on many important trends, including the fact that older adults are working longer, trying new things and staying engaged in their communities.
